But it’s when he starts venturing towards the more artful side of writing that it kinda falls a little flat for me. There’s some singles from that album that are fucking perfection though like “Adorn”, “How Many Drinks?” and even deep cuts like “Pussy is mine” which highlight Miguel’s strengths as a singer and R&B/Pop writer. Also I feel like some verses and choruses don’t really stick the landing melodically, like Miguel just stuck with the first melody that came to mind. There’s some songs that don’t really go anywhere or that build up to some anti climatic instrumental ending like the title track for example. Miguel’s raspy R&B croon, his homages to past music greats, and a strong adherence to the four minutes or less rule for pop music would make Kaleidoscope Dream feel at home in any decade. But if I’m being honest I feel like kaleidoscope dream has way more low points compared to channel orange lyrically and musically.
